Carolina Rig

A heavy sliding sinker and a bead above a swivel, then a long leader to a lightly weighted bait that floats and drifts behind the weight. We ran it through the compatibility engine for 6 fish it is tied for: 6 of 6 clear every check. For Largemouth Bass in Farm Pond the cheapest clean build is a 2/0 circle hook on 8 lb mono → 12 lb fluoro, 1/2 oz bullet + barrel swivel, on a 10.5 ft L spinning rod. About $177.

tie it when

Covering flats, points and shell beds fast. The sinker drags bottom and stirs it up while the bait trails a few feet behind at a slower fall than a Texas rig.

skip it when

Heavy grass or brush: the leader and bait drape over cover and the sinker wedges. Texas-rig it there.

How to tie a carolina rig

  1. Thread the sliding sinker onto the mainline, then a bead to protect the knot.
  2. Tie the mainline to one eye of the barrel swivel with an improved clinch or a Palomar.
  3. Tie 18 inches to 4 feet of leader to the other eye. Longer gives a slower, floatier bait; shorter is easier to cast.
  4. Tie the hook to the leader and rig the bait. Leader test under the mainline makes the leader the break point on a snag.
  5. Drag it with the rod tip sideways, not by reeling. Feel for the sinker crossing rock, shell and sand.

Solved for each fish

For every fish below, the solver searched the catalog at each water that fish is targeted in, under the rules in the next section, and kept the water where the carolina rig scores best: fewest engine errors, then fewest warnings, then cheapest. Open any row in the studio to see the same verdict.

What makes it a carolina rig

A named rig is a rule set, not a parts list. These are the rules we hand the solver. Every stage not listed (line test, hook size, rod, reel) is the solver's call, checked by the engine.

The checks that decide it

The engine runs every check on every build. These are the ones that make or break a carolina rig, with how many of the 6 solved builds each one still flags.

  • Sinker bore vs line0/6 flagged

A sliding sinker only slides if its bore clears the line through it by 0.15 mm. Under that it binds, and the fish feels the weight. The engine errors.

  • Bead bore vs line0/6 flagged

Same 0.15 mm clearance for the bead. A bead that binds stops the rig sliding and saws the line at the bore edge.

  • Swivel rating vs mainline0/6 flagged

A swivel rated under the mainline test is the weakest part of the rig, and a hookset that breaks it takes everything below. The engine errors.

  • Leader as the break point0/6 flagged

A leader under 0.75x the mainline test breaks first on a snag, so you lose the hook, not the sinker and swivel. The engine notes it rather than flags it: around rock it is usually what you want.

  • Leader heavier than the mainline0/6 flagged

Past 2x the mainline test the mainline becomes the fuse, and a snag costs the whole terminal end. The engine warns.

  • Weight vs current0/6 flagged

From a current rating of 0.5 the engine works out about 3 oz per unit of current to hold bottom, and warns under half of that. Float rigs skip it: they are not trying to hold.

  • Cast weight vs rod maximum0/6 flagged

Past the top of the rod’s casting rating the engine warns, and errors 15% beyond it, where blanks break on a hard cast.

frequently asked

06
What size hook for a carolina rig?

It depends on the fish, not the rig. Across the 6 fish the engine solved, the hook runs #4–4/0: 2/0 for Largemouth Bass, #1 for Smallmouth Bass, #4 for Walleye, 4/0 for Redfish, 1/0 for Speckled Trout, 3/0 for Flounder. Each size sits inside that fish's window on our hook size chart.

How much weight on a carolina rig?

0.5–1.5 oz in the builds we solved, set by the water: 0.5 oz for Largemouth Bass in Farm Pond, 0.5 oz for Smallmouth Bass in Clear Reservoir, 0.5 oz for Walleye in Weedy Lake, 1.5 oz for Redfish in Open Surf Beach, 1 oz for Speckled Trout in Inshore Flat, 1.5 oz for Flounder in Open Surf Beach. The engine sizes it against current (it asks for weight to hold bottom from a current rating of 0.5) and against the rod's casting window.

What line for a carolina rig?

6–17 lb mainline across the solved builds, with a leader on 6 of them. Braid ratings are compared to the rod by diameter, not printed test, because rod line ratings are written for mono.

What fish is a carolina rig for?

We solve it for Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Redfish, Speckled Trout and Flounder. Every one of them clears the engine.

What knot do I tie a carolina rig with?

the Improved Clinch Knot (85% retained strength), the Palomar Knot (95% retained strength) and the Uni Knot (90% retained strength). Where a leader meets braid, use a line-to-line knot such as the double uni or the FG.

When should I not fish a carolina rig?

Heavy grass or brush: the leader and bait drape over cover and the sinker wedges. Texas-rig it there.
