A float has a lift rating: how much terminal weight it can hold before it sinks. Balance it so the float rides low, since a float sitting high on the water is a float that a fish can feel pulling back.

Line passes straight through, so a bobber stop anywhere on the spool sets your depth. Fish 30 feet down and still cast with a 7-foot rod.
tradeoff Needs a stop and a bead to work. Without them it is just a bobber that slides to your weight and does nothing useful.
