Float
Suspends the bait and telegraphs the bite.
A float has a lift rating: how much terminal weight it can hold before it sinks. Balance it so the float rides low — a float sitting high on the water is a float that a fish can feel pulling back.

Every option, with the tradeoff
The table says what each part is. This says what it costs you to choose it.
Thill Center Slider Slip Float
Line passes straight through, so a bobber stop anywhere on the spool sets your depth. Fish 30 feet down and still cast with a 7-foot rod.
tradeoff Needs a stop and a bead to work. Without them it is just a bobber that slides to your weight and does nothing useful.
Betts Classic Fixed Bobber
The red-and-white one. Clips on, sets one depth, and catches an enormous number of bluegill every summer with zero configuration.
tradeoff Depth is capped at roughly your rod length, because anything deeper cannot be cast. Fine at three feet, useless at fifteen.
Cajun Thunder Popping Cork Rig
A concave-faced cork on a wire with beads. Snap the rod and it chugs and rattles like feeding fish, calling specks and reds from across the flat.
tradeoff It is loud on purpose. In gin-clear shallow water at midday, that same noise pushes fish off the flat.
Beau Mac Steelhead Drift Float
A high-visibility pencil float that rides current cleanly and telegraphs the softest take. The core of float-and-jig steelhead fishing.
tradeoff Balanced floats need to be weighted so only the tip shows. Under-shotted, it drags and you miss every subtle bite.
Plastilite Water-Fill Casting Bubble
A clear float you part-fill with water for casting weight. Lets a spinning rod throw a weightless fly or an unweighted bait a genuinely long way.
tradeoff Nearly invisible to the fish and nearly invisible to you. Bite detection is much worse than a proper float.
