Drift Float Rig

A long pencil float set so the bait runs just off the bottom of a river run, with shot strung down the line and a light leader to the hook. We ran it through the compatibility engine for 3 fish it is tied for: 3 of 3 clear every check. For Steelhead in River Run the cheapest clean build is a 1/0 circle hook on 8 lb mono → 8 lb fluoro, 1/4 oz split-shot + pencil float, on a 6.6 ft M spinning rod. About $141.

tie it when

Steelhead, salmon and trout in moving water. The float rides the current at the speed of the bottom flow and shows the softest take.

skip it when

Still water, where a slip bobber does the same job with less fuss, and fast, deep chutes where you cannot get the bait down before the float passes the fish.

How to tie a drift float rig

  1. Set the float on the mainline so the distance to the hook is about one and a quarter times the depth of the run.
  2. Join a lighter fluoro leader with a small swivel or a double uni, so a snag costs the hook and not the float.
  3. String split shot down the line in decreasing sizes until only the float tip shows.
  4. Tie on a small octopus hook and a bead or bait. Mend line so the float leads the drift.

Solved for each fish

For every fish below, the solver searched the catalog at each water that fish is targeted in, under the rules in the next section, and kept the water where the drift float rig scores best: fewest engine errors, then fewest warnings, then cheapest. Open any row in the studio to see the same verdict.

What makes it a drift float rig

A named rig is a rule set, not a parts list. These are the rules we hand the solver. Every stage not listed (line test, hook size, rod, reel) is the solver's call, checked by the engine.

The checks that decide it

The engine runs every check on every build. These are the ones that make or break a drift float rig, with how many of the 3 solved builds each one still flags.

  • Weight vs float lift0/3 flagged

More weight hanging under the float than it can lift, and it goes under and stays there. The engine errors.

  • Float under-shotted0/3 flagged

Under 0.35x of the float’s lift hanging below it, the float rides high and a fish has to drag it down. The engine warns.

  • Float past its working depth0/3 flagged

Past 30 ft even a slip float stops presenting a bait. The engine errors.

  • Leader as the break point0/3 flagged

A leader under 0.75x the mainline test breaks first on a snag, so you lose the hook, not the sinker and swivel. The engine notes it rather than flags it: around rock it is usually what you want.

  • Rod vs fish size0/3 flagged

The fish’s top weight against the rod’s top line rating: warn past 1.75x, error past 2.5x.

  • Reel drag floor0/3 flagged

Each fish carries a minimum drag. A reel that cannot reach it gets an error.

frequently asked

06
What size hook for a drift float rig?

It depends on the fish, not the rig. Across the 3 fish the engine solved, the hook runs #8–4/0: 1/0 for Steelhead, 4/0 for Salmon (Coho / King), #8 for Rainbow Trout. Each size sits inside that fish's window on our hook size chart.

How much weight on a drift float rig?

0.25 oz in the builds we solved, set by the water: 0.25 oz for Steelhead in River Run, 0.25 oz for Salmon (Coho / King) in River Run, 0.25 oz for Rainbow Trout in Farm Pond. The engine sizes it against current (it asks for weight to hold bottom from a current rating of 0.5) and against the rod's casting window.

What line for a drift float rig?

6–15 lb mainline across the solved builds, with a leader on 3 of them. Braid ratings are compared to the rod by diameter, not printed test, because rod line ratings are written for mono.

What fish is a drift float rig for?

We solve it for Steelhead, Salmon (Coho / King) and Rainbow Trout. Every one of them clears the engine.

What knot do I tie a drift float rig with?

the Double Uni Knot (85% retained strength), the Improved Clinch Knot (85% retained strength) and the Snell Knot (95% retained strength). Where a leader meets braid, use a line-to-line knot such as the double uni or the FG.

When should I not fish a drift float rig?

Still water, where a slip bobber does the same job with less fuss, and fast, deep chutes where you cannot get the bait down before the float passes the fish.
