Drop Shot Rig
The hook is tied partway up the line with the point turned up, and the weight hangs on the tag end below it, so the bait hovers off the bottom. We ran it through the compatibility engine for 3 fish it is tied for: 3 of 3 clear every check. For Smallmouth Bass in Clear Reservoir the cheapest clean build is a #2 octopus hook on 6 lb mono, 3/16 oz drop-shot, on a 6.6 ft M spinning rod. About $133.
tie it when
Clear, deep water and pressured fish holding just off the bottom. Bites come on a still bait, and the rod tip moves the plastic without moving the weight.
skip it when
Thick weeds that swallow the hovering bait, or strong current that lays the whole rig flat. Bait height is set by the tag length and nothing else.
How to tie a drop shot rig
- Pass the line through the hook eye from the point side and tie a Palomar, leaving a tag end of 12 to 24 inches.
- Before you tighten, pass the tag end back down through the eye from the top. That makes the hook stand out with the point up.
- Clip the drop shot weight on the tag end. The tag length is how far the bait rides off the bottom.
- Nose-hook the plastic through the very tip so it hangs level and moves on slack line.
Solved for each fish
For every fish below, the solver searched the catalog at each water that fish is targeted in, under the rules in the next section, and kept the water where the drop shot rig scores best: fewest engine errors, then fewest warnings, then cheapest. Open any row in the studio to see the same verdict.

What makes it a drop shot rig
A named rig is a rule set, not a parts list. These are the rules we hand the solver. Every stage not listed (line test, hook size, rod, reel) is the solver's call, checked by the engine.

The checks that decide it
The engine runs every check on every build. These are the ones that make or break a drop shot rig, with how many of the 3 solved builds each one still flags.
Braid to the hook in clear water0/3 flagged
Line-shy fish (0.6 and up) in gin-clear water get a warning for braid tied straight to the hook. A fluoro leader clears it.
Hook under the fish’s window0/3 flagged
Each fish has a hook size window on the unified #14…12/0 scale. Under it, the hook is swallowed or straightens. The engine flags it.
Hook over the fish’s window0/3 flagged
Over the window, the hook will not fit the mouth or the bait. The engine flags it.
Cast weight vs rod minimum0/3 flagged
Weight, bait and float together have to reach the bottom of the rod’s casting rating, or the blank never loads. The engine warns.
Weight vs current0/3 flagged
From a current rating of 0.5 the engine works out about 3 oz per unit of current to hold bottom, and warns under half of that. Float rigs skip it: they are not trying to hold.
Weight in still water0/3 flagged
At a current of 0.1 or less, 1 oz or more of sinker only crashes the bait down. The engine warns.

Parts for the Smallmouth Bass build
Gamakatsu Octopus Hook
Chemically sharpened short-shank hook with a turned-up eye. The default for live bait, drop-shot, and any rig where the bait needs to sit naturally.
Verified destination: Octopus · 4/0 · black · 100 hooks (2026-10-20). Other sizes or packs are not verified by this link.
VMC Tungsten Drop Shot Weight
Cylindrical tungsten with a line-gripping swivel clip: no knot needed, and it releases the line rather than snapping off when it wedges.

frequently asked
06What size hook for a drop shot rig?
It depends on the fish, not the rig. Across the 3 fish the engine solved, the hook runs #4–1/0: #2 for Smallmouth Bass, 1/0 for Largemouth Bass, #4 for Walleye. Each size sits inside that fish's window on our hook size chart.
How much weight on a drop shot rig?
0.1875 oz in the builds we solved, set by the water: 0.1875 oz for Smallmouth Bass in Clear Reservoir, 0.1875 oz for Largemouth Bass in Farm Pond, 0.1875 oz for Walleye in Weedy Lake. The engine sizes it against current (it asks for weight to hold bottom from a current rating of 0.5) and against the rod's casting window.
What line for a drop shot rig?
6–8 lb mainline across the solved builds, with a leader on 1 of them. Braid ratings are compared to the rod by diameter, not printed test, because rod line ratings are written for mono.
What fish is a drop shot rig for?
We solve it for Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass and Walleye. Every one of them clears the engine.
What knot do I tie a drop shot rig with?
the Palomar Knot (95% retained strength). Where a leader meets braid, use a line-to-line knot such as the double uni or the FG.
When should I not fish a drop shot rig?
Thick weeds that swallow the hovering bait, or strong current that lays the whole rig flat. Bait height is set by the tag length and nothing else.
