Split Shot Rig
A hook on the end of the line with one or more pinch-on split shot a foot or so above it. Nothing else. We ran it through the compatibility engine for 7 fish it is tied for: 7 of 7 clear every check. For Rainbow Trout in Farm Pond the cheapest clean build is a #8 aberdeen hook on 4 lb mono, 0.1 oz split-shot, on a 5.6 ft UL spinning rod. About $114.
tie it when
Light baits in still or slow water: trout, panfish, a worm drifted along a creek bottom. The lightest way to get a bait down.
skip it when
Any real current or any weight over a quarter ounce. Shot slides and nicks the line under load, and past a few pieces you want a sinker made for the job.
How to tie a split shot rig
- Tie the hook straight to the mainline with an improved clinch or a Palomar.
- Pinch one split shot on 12 to 18 inches above the hook. Close it with pliers, not teeth.
- Add shot one piece at a time until the bait reaches bottom. On light line, retie after moving a shot a few times.
Solved for each fish
For every fish below, the solver searched the catalog at each water that fish is targeted in, under the rules in the next section, and kept the water where the split shot rig scores best: fewest engine errors, then fewest warnings, then cheapest. Open any row in the studio to see the same verdict.

What makes it a split shot rig
A named rig is a rule set, not a parts list. These are the rules we hand the solver. Every stage not listed (line test, hook size, rod, reel) is the solver's call, checked by the engine.

The checks that decide it
The engine runs every check on every build. These are the ones that make or break a split shot rig, with how many of the 7 solved builds each one still flags.
Cast weight vs rod minimum0/7 flagged
Weight, bait and float together have to reach the bottom of the rod’s casting rating, or the blank never loads. The engine warns.
Weight vs current0/7 flagged
From a current rating of 0.5 the engine works out about 3 oz per unit of current to hold bottom, and warns under half of that. Float rigs skip it: they are not trying to hold.
Hook under the fish’s window0/7 flagged
Each fish has a hook size window on the unified #14…12/0 scale. Under it, the hook is swallowed or straightens. The engine flags it.
Hook over the fish’s window0/7 flagged
Over the window, the hook will not fit the mouth or the bait. The engine flags it.
Line heavier than the fish needs0/7 flagged
Mainline past 1.5x the top of the fish’s line window kills the light presentation this rig exists for. The engine warns.

Parts for the Rainbow Trout build
Eagle Claw Aberdeen Light Wire
Long-shank fine-wire hook for crappie and panfish. The long shank makes unhooking easy and the light wire bends out of brush instead of costing you the rig.

frequently asked
06What size hook for a split shot rig?
It depends on the fish, not the rig. Across the 7 fish the engine solved, the hook runs #10–#1: #8 for Rainbow Trout, #8 for Brook Trout, #10 for Bluegill & Panfish, #8 for Crappie, #4 for Smallmouth Bass, #2 for Largemouth Bass, #1 for Walleye. Each size sits inside that fish's window on our hook size chart.
How much weight on a split shot rig?
0.1–0.25 oz in the builds we solved, set by the water: 0.1 oz for Rainbow Trout in Farm Pond, 0.1 oz for Brook Trout in Hardwater / Ice, 0.1 oz for Bluegill & Panfish in Farm Pond, 0.1 oz for Crappie in Farm Pond, 0.1 oz for Smallmouth Bass in Clear Reservoir, 0.25 oz for Largemouth Bass in Farm Pond, 0.1 oz for Walleye in Weedy Lake. The engine sizes it against current (it asks for weight to hold bottom from a current rating of 0.5) and against the rod's casting window.
What line for a split shot rig?
4–8 lb mainline across the solved builds, with a leader on 1 of them. Braid ratings are compared to the rod by diameter, not printed test, because rod line ratings are written for mono.
What fish is a split shot rig for?
We solve it for Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout, Bluegill & Panfish, Crappie, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass and Walleye. Every one of them clears the engine.
What knot do I tie a split shot rig with?
the Improved Clinch Knot (85% retained strength) and the Palomar Knot (95% retained strength). Where a leader meets braid, use a line-to-line knot such as the double uni or the FG.
When should I not fish a split shot rig?
Any real current or any weight over a quarter ounce. Shot slides and nicks the line under load, and past a few pieces you want a sinker made for the job.
