Texas Rig
A soft plastic on an extra-wide-gap hook with the point buried back in the bait, and a bullet weight sliding on the line ahead of it. We ran it through the compatibility engine for 2 fish it is tied for: 2 of 2 clear every check. For Largemouth Bass in Weedy Lake the cheapest clean build is a 2/0 ewg hook on 8 lb mono → 12 lb fluoro, 3/16 oz bullet, on a 6.6 ft M spinning rod. About $142.
tie it when
Grass, timber, docks and brush: anywhere an exposed hook point would snag on every cast. The bullet nose and the buried point let it crawl through cover.
skip it when
Open, clean bottom where nothing snags. The buried point costs you hookups there, and a drop shot or a Carolina rig shows the bait better.
How to tie a texas rig
- Thread the bullet weight onto the mainline, point first, so the narrow end faces the rod.
- Add a bead if you want the click and a cushion for the knot. Optional.
- Tie on the EWG hook with a Palomar or an improved clinch.
- Push the hook point a quarter inch into the nose of the plastic, bring it out the side, and slide the plastic up the shank over the eye.
- Turn the hook and bury the point back into the body so it lies flat and straight. A kinked bait spins.
- Peg the weight with a bobber stop for heavy cover, or let it slide for open water.
Solved for each fish
For every fish below, the solver searched the catalog at each water that fish is targeted in, under the rules in the next section, and kept the water where the texas rig scores best: fewest engine errors, then fewest warnings, then cheapest. Open any row in the studio to see the same verdict.

What makes it a texas rig
A named rig is a rule set, not a parts list. These are the rules we hand the solver. Every stage not listed (line test, hook size, rod, reel) is the solver's call, checked by the engine.

The checks that decide it
The engine runs every check on every build. These are the ones that make or break a texas rig, with how many of the 2 solved builds each one still flags.
Sinker bore vs line0/2 flagged
A sliding sinker only slides if its bore clears the line through it by 0.15 mm. Under that it binds, and the fish feels the weight. The engine errors.
Bead bore vs line0/2 flagged
Same 0.15 mm clearance for the bead. A bead that binds stops the rig sliding and saws the line at the bore edge.
Hook pattern vs bait0/2 flagged
Soft plastics are designed around a hook pattern. On the wrong one the bait will not sit straight or rig weedless. The engine warns.
Cast weight vs rod minimum0/2 flagged
Weight, bait and float together have to reach the bottom of the rod’s casting rating, or the blank never loads. The engine warns.
Cast weight vs rod maximum0/2 flagged
Past the top of the rod’s casting rating the engine warns, and errors 15% beyond it, where blanks break on a hard cast.
Weight in still water0/2 flagged
At a current of 0.1 or less, 1 oz or more of sinker only crashes the bait down. The engine warns.

frequently asked
06What size hook for a texas rig?
It depends on the fish, not the rig. Across the 2 fish the engine solved, the hook runs 1/0–2/0: 2/0 for Largemouth Bass, 1/0 for Smallmouth Bass. Each size sits inside that fish's window on our hook size chart.
How much weight on a texas rig?
0.0625–0.1875 oz in the builds we solved, set by the water: 0.1875 oz for Largemouth Bass in Weedy Lake, 0.0625 oz for Smallmouth Bass in Clear Reservoir. The engine sizes it against current (it asks for weight to hold bottom from a current rating of 0.5) and against the rod's casting window.
What line for a texas rig?
6–8 lb mainline across the solved builds, with a leader on 1 of them. Braid ratings are compared to the rod by diameter, not printed test, because rod line ratings are written for mono.
What fish is a texas rig for?
We solve it for Largemouth Bass and Smallmouth Bass. Every one of them clears the engine.
What knot do I tie a texas rig with?
the Palomar Knot (95% retained strength) and the Improved Clinch Knot (85% retained strength). Where a leader meets braid, use a line-to-line knot such as the double uni or the FG.
When should I not fish a texas rig?
Open, clean bottom where nothing snags. The buried point costs you hookups there, and a drop shot or a Carolina rig shows the bait better.
