Braid is strong and thin but highly visible and has no abrasion resistance. A fluorocarbon leader buys you invisibility and toughness exactly where the fish is looking. Wire buys you teeth-proofing at the cost of every bite from a line-shy fish.

Seaguar Blue Label Fluorocarbon Leader
The benchmark fluoro leader. Refractive index close to water, so it effectively disappears, and it takes abrasion far better than mono at the same test.
tradeoff Expensive per yard and stiff at heavy tests — 60 lb Blue Label does not want to knot easily. Warm it in your hands and wet every knot.
Yo-Zuri HD Carbon Fluorocarbon Leader
Noticeably cheaper fluoro that still hides well and knots more easily than the premium stuff because it runs a touch softer.
tradeoff Slightly thicker per test and a little less abrasion-resistant. On oyster bar and barnacle structure, spend up.
Ande Premium Monofilament Leader
Soft, forgiving mono leader with real stretch. That stretch is a shock absorber — on hard-charging fish it saves hook holes that fluoro tears open.
tradeoff Visible in clear water and it floats, which changes how your bait sinks. Wrong choice for spooky fish on a clear flat.
American Fishing Wire Surflon Micro Supreme Wire
Nylon-coated 7-strand stainless. Supple enough to knot with a uni, tough enough that pike and mackerel teeth do not touch it.
tradeoff Wire is visible and stiff. It costs you bites from anything line-shy — use it only when the alternative is losing the fish and the lure.
Knot 2 Kinky Titanium Toothproof Leader
Single-strand titanium that will not take a set. Kink it, straighten it, and it comes back — which is why musky anglers run one leader all season.
tradeoff The most expensive leader material here by a wide margin. Justifiable only where a lost fish means a lost $30 bait too.
