What this build is, and is not
A flats build. Braid to a long fluoro leader for the oyster bars, a jighead with scented plastic, and a kayak stable enough to stand up and sight-fish from. It is assembled around Redfish in Inshore Flat and every tolerance below comes from those two profiles.
It is not a universal setup, and it is not the cheapest possible version of itself. The constraints it actually operates inside:
- The rod is printed 8–20 lb and 0.125–0.75 oz. Cast lighter than 0.125 oz and you cannot load the blank; fish heavier than 20 lb and a hookset can break it.
- Drag tops out at 24 lb against a 10 lb floor for Redfish. A fish that needs more than that gets it from the rod and your thumb, or it leaves.
- The hook is specified at 2/0. That size is matched to the bait in this build — change the bait and the hook size changes with it.
- Sized for 3–25 lb fish on 15–40 lb mainline, with hooks in the 2/0 to 6/0 window. Outside that band this is the wrong build.
- Tuned for 1–6 ft of gin-clear salt water at 0.35 current. Heavier flow needs more weight, not more line.
- Slots left empty: beads, swivel, weight, float, storage, waders. Those are optional for this rig, not forgotten — add them when the trip calls for them.

Owner Mutu Light Circle
A lighter-wire circle that still holds shape. The conservation-minded choice for inshore bait fishing where regulations require circles.
tradeoff Lighter wire penetrates on smaller fish but will flex on a big fish in current. Step up a wire class for anything over 20 lb.
Seaguar Blue Label Fluorocarbon Leader
The benchmark fluoro leader. Refractive index close to water, so it effectively disappears, and it takes abrasion far better than mono at the same test.
tradeoff Expensive per yard and stiff at heavy tests — 60 lb Blue Label does not want to knot easily. Warm it in your hands and wet every knot.
Daiwa J-Braid Grand x8
Eight-strand braid with a coating that makes it genuinely slick — it casts further than round braid at the same test and handles beautifully.
tradeoff Slick braid slips more on knots. Add wraps to your uni, or tie an FG, or it will pull through under load.
Shimano Stradic FM Spinning Reel
Where "nice reel" starts. Cold-forged gearing, a genuinely sealed body, and a drag that stays linear from the first inch to the hundredth yard.
tradeoff Three times a President for maybe 30% more reel. The difference shows up on day two hundred, not day one.
St. Croix Mojo Inshore Spinning Rod
A medium-power spinning blank with saltwater hardware. The answer whenever you need casting-rod backbone but want to keep a spinning reel — big inshore fish, pike, and anything thrown on braid.
tradeoff Most heavy-power rods are casting rods, so this fills a real gap — and you pay a premium for it. If you are happy on a baitcaster, the same power costs a third as much.
Berkley Gulp! Shrimp
Scent-soaked synthetic bait that genuinely works when live shrimp is unavailable. Reds, specks, and flounder eat it without hesitation.
tradeoff The scent is the product, and it evaporates. Once a piece dries out on the deck it is no better than plain plastic.
Onyx M-16 Inflatable PFD
A low-profile inflatable you will actually wear all day, which is the only property of a life jacket that matters at all.
tradeoff The manual version requires you to pull the handle. If you are likely to be unconscious, buy the auto-inflate.
Pelican Catch Classic 100 Kayak
A tunnel-hull sit-on-top stable enough to stand and cast from. Standing changes sight-fishing on a flat completely.
tradeoff Stability comes from width, and width costs speed. Covering three miles of shoreline takes a while.
Deeper PRO+ 2 Castable Sonar
A sonar ball you cast on a rod. It maps depth, structure, and fish arches to your phone from the bank — no boat required.
tradeoff You are casting a $250 lump of electronics on fishing line. People do lose them. Use heavy braid and a good knot.
