UPF 30+ hooded long sleeve with a face gaiter built in. On open water, reflected UV roughly doubles your exposure — this is the fix.
tradeoff Sun protection, not warmth or waterproofing. Below about 60°F it is a base layer, not an outer layer.
Frogg Toggs Classic All-Sport Rain Suit
Absurdly cheap, genuinely waterproof, and breathable enough to wear all day. Nothing at this price keeps you drier.
tradeoff The material tears on brush and hook points. Treat it as a two-season item and buy another one.
Simms Challenger Fishing Jacket
Properly taped seams, a hood that turns with your head, and pockets you can reach while wearing a wading belt. Built for standing in weather.
tradeoff Four times the Frogg Toggs for maybe twice the jacket. Worth it if you fish through winter, not if you fish six sunny days a year.
Buff CoolNet UV Headwear
A tube of UPF 50 fabric that covers neck, ears, and face — the three places anglers actually get skin cancer.
tradeoff Hot and slightly claustrophobic in dead-still air. Most people take it off, which defeats the point.
Costa Del Mar Polarized Fishing Sunglasses
Polarization cuts surface glare so you see structure, fish, and the drop-off. On a flat it is the difference between sight-fishing and guessing.
tradeoff Expensive, and the lens tint matters more than the brand. A $40 polarized pair beats $200 of non-polarized glass.
Onyx M-16 Inflatable PFD
A low-profile inflatable you will actually wear all day, which is the only property of a life jacket that matters at all.
